For two reasons, to protect you and to protect the buyer!
If a buyer claims that they did not receive an item you have to be able to PROVE it was delivered. Proof of posting is not enough!
If the buyer paid you by paypal and they file a dispute against you for non receipt Paypal will want proof the item was delivered not just posted. Signed for only costs an extra 70p on top of the normal postage and you can add this to the price you want for your item when listing.
If you send items by normal mail and they get lost you will not havea leg to stand on with Paypal, Us or a Credit card company doing a chargeback. Cover yourself by sending all items under £34 in value by recorded mail and items over £34 in value by special delivery.
